Back in time may or may not have been where Sam Tyler was. I know people visit here who haven't seen Series 2 yet, so I won't spoil the ending. I'm not even sure what I make of it myself at the moment - not really sure I liked it much. I don't much like the idea of a spin-off though - it's kind of like the Matrix sequels: once the premise had been explored, and you had come to your own conclusions about the nature of reality, however entertaining the rest of the story was, it never had the same edge.
Back in time was where the Doctor went to get his mojo back. Yep, The Shakespeare Code was proper old skool Doctor, mucking about in the past with a flagrant disregard the causal nature of the universe. Or something. Forward in time was where he went in the last episode, which was even better, and deserves a post of its own. Later.
Back in time is what I am - back in time for...
This month it's all about Karen Hancock, and her rather splendid new fantasy novel, Return of the Guardian-King. I wonder if he was back in time?
Now, I have come to the conclusion that I don't get fantasy. I tried to read Lord Foul's Bane (The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever, Book 1) recently, and I was enjoying it while he was stomping round moaning about leprosy, but as soon as he got hit by a car and ended up in fantasy land, I lost the plot. He should've gone to 1973, as far as I'm concerned.
All of which digression is to explain why I won't be reviewing the book myself. I'll leave that to my fellow bloggers, at least some of whom I'm sure get fantasy....

What? You don't get fantasy? Really?
Well, that's ok, I do. Not sure why...
Do me a huge favor. Would you post a link to me in the next couple of days? I have an interview with the author.
BTW, I cannot WAIT to see the new Dr. I loved Tom Baker but how many years ago was that? ??
About 30, I guess... Tom Baker was my first Doctor, and just occasionally I expect David Tennant to pull a packet of jelly babies out of his coat pocket too...
"Don't get fantasy ... don't get fantasy." I'm trying to get a grasp of that but it's hard because my eyes are blurred and my breath is short. LOL
Well, Steve. All I can say is, your life must be quite ... uneventful.
But I suppose you spend all your time on other planets. Hahah.
Thanks for joining in the conversation.
Oh, but don't judge all of fantasy by Lord Foul's Bane. I LOVED that book, but almost put it down after chapter 2 or 3. The protag was so dispicable, I didn't have a reason to keep reading--except a friend of mine said it was worth it. And wow! Those books are why I write fantasy.
Karen's books are totally different. In some ways, she still deals with the reluctant hero, but Abramm is never unlikeable like Thomas Covenant was.
The world building in the beginning of the first book took some work, but again, it was so worth it. If I could persuade you to hang in until p. 100, I bet you'd be hooked.

oh, poohey. I don't get sci-fi, so there! ;-)
There's really nothing to not-get. There are portals, and they aren't time portals, but, well, you'll get them. Promise!
(Not kidding about sci-fi. I really don't get it.)
It's not just that book. I didn't get the one with the rings either. Maybe when there's not a book about spaceships or robots waiting to be read I'll give it another go.
Prolly not though. ;)
